By many measures Richard was a 'one-off'. At work Richard was not only highly skilled, inquisitive and enthusiastic but also could at times be found in fancy dress - what a mix. I think my favourite memory was the look of sheer enjoyment on his face when we told me he had emailed an astronaut on the International Space Station and they had taken a picture of his house from space - like looking into the face of a five year old boy at the wheel of a fire engine (I bet he did that!).
Richard will be missed, I am not sure walking into the Data Centre in Portsmouth will ever be the same but it will be an opportunity to remember him, his warmth, his commitment and his humour.
